June 1998 Published The Historic Commercial Heritage of Downtown Cherokee, 1870-1048, by James Jacobsen. August 2005 Cherokee Commercial Historic District (CCHD) listed in National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) Business District. July 2007 A Historical Walk of Downtown Cherokee was created as a collaborative effort by CHPC, the Cherokee Arts Council, and the Cherokee Area Archives. 2014-2018 City of Cherokee awarded Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from The Iowa Economic Development Authority. This is known as the Façade Project. April 2017 Published Cherokee Historic and Architectural Reconnaissance Survey Report, by Marlys Svendsen. 2017 Cherokee Mental Health Institute buildings, Donohoe and Wade, included in Preservation Iowa’s Most Endangered Properties list. 2018 Wilson High School and Otto Rudolph Furniture building included in Preservation Iowa’s Most Endangered Properties list. May 2017, 2018, 2019 and September 2020-2024 Sponsored events to publicize Historic Preservation Month in Cherokee. June 2018 Awarded Historical Resource Development Program (HRDP) grant from State Historical Society of Iowa (SHSI) to nominate four residential and two commercial properties to the NRHP.
